Zambia has a lot of holiday, and this week we celebrated Youth Day. In Zambia, if you are not married and you are ages 13-35, you are considered a youth. Several of our staff members fall into this category, so we decided we needed to celebrate this Zambian holiday with an afternoon of fun and games. But, since we don’t have many youth, we included the children and even us “older” people.
It was a hot day, so we had a lot of water games. First, we played balloon toss with the children, and then the adults. ….and….were the winners for the children, and Wes and Elizabeth won the adult toss—the prize, a bar of soap.
Next we played a crazy relay where we first had to spin around with our head on top of a bat, five times (although Darbi originally said ten), run down to the other side, put on some clothes and a hat, take them off and run back.
Wes was the first adult and I really thought he was pretending, but he said he wasn’t. After spinning around he ran totally off course and then back. It was hilarious. Although our team started out a bit slow, somehow we caught up and won.
The next game, water volleyball, was just for the adults. Needless to say, our team won again thanks to the great coaching ability of Wes and the great athletic skill of all our team members (well, maybe not all).
I didn’t get to see all of the last game, as I had to help take care of an injured participant, but I came back just in time to see a whole lot of wet staff members and children.
It was a fun day for all.
